The mission of the U.S. Department of Transportation is to "serve the United States by ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of life of the American people, today and into the future." It meets its air safety mandate via the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the VOLPE National Transportation Systems Center. Through them, the DOT has provided Flight Safety Technologies with $16.3M in R&D funding which, in recent years, has come from NASA appropriations.
