UNICORNTM is being developed to provide a low-cost, effective alternative to larger commercial systems for early warning and threat detection.

Numerous factors, including weather, reduced visibility and other atmospheric conditions can hinder the small airline pilot's ability to maintain visual reference and avoid collisions.
How It Works
The unique integration of three distinct microwave antenna horn designs are arranged to provide a continuous detection and tracking of nearby threats. The system will provide both a visual display and aural warnings to alert of approaching aircraft or terrain.
Cost Effective Concept
Drastically less expensive than current hazard detection radar systems available for commercial aircraft and without a need for reciprocating communication between aircraft, UNICORNTM will be completely self-contained and affordable for thousands of small and private aircraft owners.
UNIversal Collision Obviation and Reduced Near-miss

Flight Safety Technologies is developing the UNICORN™ early warning system for small aircraft, to provide pilots who previously relied on eyesight alone with what we believe to be a low-cost, self-contained system for avoiding collisions.  

We are developing UNICORN™'s radar technology based on the unique integration of three distinct microwave antenna horn designs arranged to provide a continuous detection and tracking of nearby threats in three-dimensional space. Upon successful development, UNICORN™ would provide a pilot with both a visual display and aural warnings to alert of approaching aircraft or terrain.  We are working to design UNICORN™ with a small footprint and streamlined radome, so that the system will have minimal impact on airframe flying characteristics and flight performance.  

We believe the UNICORN™ system, upon completion of development and testing, will produce a compact, lightweight antenna array capable of automatically alerting the pilot to all potential nearby collision hazards sufficiently early enough to provide the time necessary for taking evasive maneuvers.

Developing UNICORN™ technology will help small aircraft operators overcome elements such as:
  • ground hazards
  • other aircraft
  • bad weather
  • sunlight glare

A pilot would no longer have to rely on sight or air traffic controller alerts to be aware of the potential for an accident -- UNICORN™ would provide ample warning.
