Flight Safety Technologies is participating in the development of a unique new countermeasure to protect military and commercial jets against man portable air defense system (MANPADS) weapons. TIICM (Tactical Integrated Illumination Countermeasure) is an advanced countermeasure technology intended for installation on commercial airliners and military aircraft for protection and safety of aircraft and personnel during take-off, low-level flight, and landing situations.
TIICM uses Halogen-Sapphire lamps, currently under development, to produce infrared signatures. These bulbs are intended to replace and augment existing anti-collision lights, requiring only minimal changes to the aircraft and no drag penalty. TIICM uses infrared deceptive broadcast jamming, which causes missiles to veer off course resulting in safe miss distances without the requiring a missile warning system. The TIICM system shows promise of being a low-cost, effective countermeasure with very low impact on aircraft operating costs.
More information regarding how TIICM works may be found in this Overview Presentation, originally published in May, 2005, by Flight Safety Technologies, Inc, and updated on October 18, 2005.
